Why I am taking part in the National Day of Prayer

Instead of asking why take part in a day of prayer, we could ask the more serious question, why not? Could we come up with a reason not to pray? Of course not. We are a praying church not just one day in the year but every day, but a national day of prayer is something that brings us all back to the importance and need of prayer and the need to not neglect it. Two quotes from Oswald Chambers help me to focus on the importance of prayer, “Too often we treat prayer as the preparation for the work of the church…do you not see, prayer IS the work of the church.” It is our work as a church. Just like any work it is something we need to make time for and labour diligently in. Chambers also said, “We tend to use prayer as a last resort, but God wants it to be our first line of defense. We pray when there's nothing else we can do, but God wants us to pray before we do anything at all.” As we look forward to the day of prayer, let’s not look on it as a day called just because things have got so bad, but as a day called to remind us that with God all things are possible. James 5:16, “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”
